01 Mar Frederick York Wolseley Lunch – Lincolnshire – 2015
A good turnout of WOC members from the Lincolnshire area, gathered together on Sunday 1st March and enjoyed a superb Frederick York Wolseley lunch at the Healing Manor Hotel.
The hotel is a stunning country house situated in 36 acres of parkland on the outskirts of Grimsby, Lincolnshire. The food was absolutely excellent and some members tried the crispy battered Whitby haddock, which was huge. Members also arrived in a 1951 Wolseley 6/80 and a 1955 Austin A90.
Healing Manor was built around 1892 for the Portman family who had significant land holdings in and around Healing. We heard later, that a former Miss Lincolnshire when visiting the Manor, said she had seen an apparition which was believed to be the former owner Viscount Portman. The hotel is listed as a haunted building on a Haunted Lincolnshire website.
Staff at the hotel have said that Viscount Portman’s pipe smoke can often be smelt in parts of the building. They also said they had heard reportings of mysterious shadows moving around the hotel corridors and the clattering of horse’s hooves outside. Our group didn’t see anything on our visit – perhaps next time!
