Classic Wolseleys and Classic Aircraft weekend in Lincolnshire

Forty Wolseley Owners Club members and partners, in 17 Wolseleys, visited the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) visitor centre at RAF Coningsby.

The visit to the BBMF at RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire, by special invitation, organised by our Deputy Chairman Keith Bartlam, took place on Friday 6th September 2013.

On Saturday, the Wolseley Owners Club also displayed 14 Wolseleys at Lincolnshire’s Aviation Heritage Centre for visitors to see amongst the aircraft.

The weekend was later completed with our members enjoying a BBQ into the evening.

Full report of the weekend

Members began to arrive in Lincolnshire on Thursday evening from North Wales, South East, North West and far Northern areas of England ready for an early start on Friday morning, when members first gathered together in Coningsby ready to enter the BBMF within RAF Coningsby.

Then members attended a very interesting briefing given by one of the BBMF Team. This was followed by a delicious lunch, before visiting the hangars with a personal guided tour, seeing the Spitfires, Hurricane and the Dakota.

Members also enjoyed an up close and exclusive visit to the Typhoon facility later in the day, to see the RAF’s latest high-tech fighters, which fly at over 1,522 mph (Mach 2)!

Friday evening meal

In the evening, members gathered together and enjoyed a superb group meal in The Leagate Inn in Coningsby. Most members partook in a three course meal during energetic discussion of the days events.

Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre

On Saturday 7th September, members visited Lincolnshire’s Aviation Heritage Centre in East Spilsby, Lincolnshire, home of the Lancaster NX611 and saw the sights and heard the sounds of a real World War Two Airfield.

Members saw the original control tower with Berlin raid Reconstruction while there, a unique collection of vintage vehicles, an ‘Escape Museum’, Home Front exhibitions, aircraft wreckages, the original Barnes Wallis Bouncing Bomb, the Canberra Cockpit and read many personal stories of the airmen of WW2. Lunch was enjoyed in the NAAFI there, listening to wartime songs.
