Celebrations – Frederick York Wolseley!, Dublin and South East England

Joint celebrations by The Wolseley Owners Club were held between Thursday 15th and Sunday 18th March 2012 to celebrate the 175th birthday of Frederick York Wolseley in both his birth place in Dublin Ireland, and Kent his final resting place in the South East of England.

On Friday in Dublin, members drove their Wolseleys to Wolseley’s birthplace, Mount Wolseley for a splendid lunch and a photo opportunity. On Sunday, members in Ireland enjoyed a drive to Glendalough, taking in some stunning scenery and great places of interest.

On Friday in the South East, members were treated to a tour of the Hampton Traffic Garage, home to classic cars from the Metropolitan Police collection and enjoyed a talk given by police officers. They were then taken to lunch in the classic cars to the police club house in Surrey. This was the first time a classic car club had been invited to visit the traffic garage.

On Sunday in Kent, members met at Beckenham Cemetery, the last resting place of Frederick York Wolseley, for a brief service given by the Reverend Bill Mullenger. A floral tribute made up of, Irish Moss, Australian Kangaroo Paw and English Primrose,  Conifer and Hyacinth, representing his birthplace in Ireland, his career in Australia and his resting place in England was placed upon the grave. The service was followed by a run to the site of Frederick’s last residence in Belvedere Road in Penge and then a meet at the Coolings Garden Centre in Knockholt, Kent for refreshments and a further photo opportunity.

Everyone agreed that a great time was had by all. More details and photos are included in the forthcoming Wisely 5 magazine due out soon!
